Bridging ecology and physics: Australian fairy circles regenerate following model assumptions on ecohydrological feedbacks

Stephan Getzin et al.

Summary: The study in spinifex-grassland ecosystem of Western Australia demonstrates that the fairy circles (FCs) pattern influences the vitality of grass, with high-vitality grasses being more associated with FCs. The feedback exhibited by grass at different scales not only indicates facilitation or competition, but also supports the infiltration feedback as proposed in theoretical models. These findings further validate the importance of scale-dependent feedbacks in explaining the emergent grassland pattern.

Revisiting Theron's hypothesis on the origin of fairy circles after four decades: Euphorbias are not the cause

Stephan Getzin et al.

Summary: The Euphorbia hypothesis on the origin of fairy circles in Namibia is rejected based on the fact that grass growth was not prevented under decaying shrubs, the size of dead Euphorbias cannot explain the size of observed FCs, and the spatial distribution of Euphorbias cannot cause the specific pattern signature of FCs.

The contribution of pathogenic soil microbes to ring formation in an iconic Australian arid grass, Triodia basedowii (Poaceae)

Neil D. Ross et al.

Summary: The research suggests that an accumulation of pathogenic soil microbes may hinder seedling emergence and growth in the center of ring-forming Triodia grasses; Seedling emergence in the center of the rings significantly increased in response to soil sterilization; However, no significant difference in growth between sterile and live soils was found in this study, possibly due to high rates of seedling mortality in all treatments.
