Alternative models like RI-CLPM and LCM-SR are suggested to separate different variable variations and control for time constant covariates. Third variables that change across time may still confound the relationships between variables in these models.

Physical activity and cognitive function: between-person and within-person associations and moderators

Summary: The study found that self-reported physical activity did not predict changes in cognitive function. However, physical activity positively predicted cognitive performance at baseline, especially in older adults who were more active. Additionally, physical activity had a positive within-person effect on cognitive function, with variations in episodic memory recall and verbal fluency.
