The Effects of Four Doses of Vitamin D Supplements on Falls in Older Adults A Response-Adaptive, Randomized Clinical Trial

Lawrence J. Appel et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the effects of different doses of vitamin D-3 supplements on falls in older persons. The results showed that supplementation with 1000 IU or higher of vitamin D-3 per day did not prevent falls compared to 200 IU, and even raised safety concerns.

Gait speed in clinical and daily living assessments in Parkinson's disease patients: performance versus capacity

Arash Atrsaei et al.

Summary: The study found that Parkinson's disease patients have similar gait speed patterns in clinic and real-life conditions, and there is a moderate correlation between medication dosage and the difference between the two. During home assessments, only about 3% of strides had speeds equal or greater than those in the clinic, occurring mainly during long walking bouts before noon, around 26 minutes after medication intake, peaking 3 hours after Levodopa intake. These results suggest the potential for better controlling medication intake in PD patients by considering both functional capacity and continuous monitoring of gait speed in real-life conditions.

Assessment of Physical Activity in Adults Using Wrist Accelerometers

Fangyu Liu et al.

Summary: The health benefits of physical activity (PA) are widely recognized, and accelerometers have provided a more objective and continuous measurement of PA in free-living conditions. Wrist-worn accelerometers are popular due to their low participant burden, but their validity and reliability for adults are still under debate. Despite the rich information provided by accelerometer data, researchers have yet to fully utilize this data, and new methodological developments are emerging to address accelerometer limitations.

Estimation of free-living walking cadence from wrist-worn sensor accelerometry data and its association with SF-36 quality of life scores

Marta Karas et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the stride segmentation performance of ADEPT for subsecond-level accelerometry data collected in the free-living environment using a wrist-worn sensor, expanding the existing pattern-matching algorithm and finding a significant association between walking cadence and SF-36 quality of life measures.
