Effects of Breaking Up Prolonged Sitting on Cardiovascular Parameters: A systematic Review

Gustavo Oliveira da Silva et al.

Summary: This systematic review aimed to analyze the acute and chronic effects of sitting breaks on cardiovascular parameters. Walking was found to be the main acute study strategy, showing improvements on blood pressure, vascular function, and other cardiovascular parameters. Breaking up or reducing sitting time was shown to improve cardiovascular parameters, especially when combined with walking.

Joint association between accelerometry-measured daily combination of time spent in physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep and all-cause mortality: a pooled analysis of six prospective cohorts using compositional analysis

Sebastien Chastin et al.

Summary: This study examined the combined associations of different intensities of physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep duration with all-cause mortality. It found that the proportion of time spent in moderate to vigorous physical activity was significantly associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality, while sleep duration was not significant. Additionally, the balance of time spent in light physical activity relative to sedentary behavior also played a role in modifying the association between moderate to vigorous physical activity and mortality in hip accelerometer-based studies.

Association of daily composition of physical activity and sedentary behaviour with incidence of cardiovascular disease in older adults

Manasa S. Yerramalla et al.

Summary: Among older adults, increasing the duration of MVPA at the expense of time in either SB or LIPA was found to be associated with a lower incidence of CVD. This study supports public health guidelines encouraging an increase in MVPA or at least maintaining current MVPA duration.

The Evolution of Technology and Physical Inactivity: The Good, the Bad, and the Way Forward

Mary N. Woessner et al.

Summary: Throughout history, technological advances have made daily activities more efficient, but have also led to increased sedentary behavior and a rise in chronic conditions related to obesity. Despite longer life expectancy, people are living with poorer physical function and reduced quality of life due to these factors. Discussing how technology influences sedentary behavior, this review proposes utilizing technology to encourage greater engagement in physical activity.

Physical Activity Intensity Cut-Points for Wrist-Worn GENEActiv in Older Adults

Francois Fraysse et al.

Summary: This study aimed to establish GENEActiv intensity cutpoints in older adults and compare the classification accuracy between dominant or non-dominant wrist using both laboratory and free-living data. The results showed that the dominant wrist device resulted in significantly more sedentary time in free-living data, while the non-dominant wrist showed more light and MVPA time.
