New Zealand design wind speeds, directional and lee-zone multipliers proposed for AS/NZS 1170.2:2021

Amir Ali Safaei Pirooz et al.

Summary: This study estimates design wind speeds and lee-zone multipliers for New Zealand through historical wind data analysis and numerical weather prediction model. It highlights the importance of homogenization of data and extreme value analysis and proposes significant changes for future wind-loading standards, including adding a new wind region, refining wind zone boundaries, and modifying lee-zone regions and multipliers.

Sub-km scale numerical weather prediction model simulations of radiation fog

Daniel K. E. Smith et al.

Summary: Numerical weather prediction (NWP) of fog remains a challenge, with the Met Office Unified Model (MetUM) showing significant systematic model deficiencies in simulating fog events. The sub-km scale versions of MetUM are in better agreement with observations, but demonstrate high sensitivity to surface properties. Sensitivity tests reveal that the specification of soil thermal conductivity parametrisation can lead to up to a 5-hr change in fog onset time.

Improving ECMWF short-term intensive rainfall forecasts using generative adversarial nets and deep belief networks

Huosheng Xie et al.

Summary: This study proposed a model using ECMWF data and a machine learning framework to improve the forecasting of short-term intensive rainfall in Fujian Province, China. The data preprocessing and resampling methods used in this study were effective. The classification model combining focal loss object detection and deep belief network outperformed other machine learning methods in predicting short-term intensive rainfall.

Maximum Instantaneous Wind Speed Forecasting and Performance Evaluation by Using Numerical Weather Prediction and On-Site Measurement

Atsushi Yamaguchi et al.

Summary: This study proposes a maximum instantaneous wind speed forecast methodology based on the ARX model, using numerical weather prediction and on-site measurement as inputs, and estimating model parameters using non-parametric regression with forgetting factors. The research finds that utilizing numerical weather prediction with higher horizontal resolution improves prediction accuracy, and evaluates predictability using ROC curve and AUC.

Coupling High-Resolution Numerical Weather Prediction and Computational Fluid Dynamics: Auckland Harbour Case Study

Amir Ali Safaei Pirooz et al.

Summary: This study investigates the resilience of large cities and their built infrastructure in New Zealand to extreme winds by coupling a high-resolution NWP model with CFD simulations. The CFD simulations and NWP forecasts showed good agreement in estimating wind speeds and gusts over the bridge, emphasizing the importance of understanding local wind speed effects.
