Scientists' warning - The outstanding biodiversity of islands is in peril

Jose Maria Fernandez-Palacios et al.

Summary: Although islands only account for 6.7% of the Earth's land surface area, they harbor around 20% of the Earth's biodiversity and a disproportionately high percentage of threatened and extinct species. Islands act as both cradles for evolutionary diversity and museums of once widespread lineages, but their unique endemic species are often vulnerable due to genetic and demographic factors linked with colonization history. The vulnerability of island biota, exacerbated by anthropogenic pressures, has led to a significant number of extinctions in the past 500 years, with ongoing biodiversity loss posing a serious threat to the world's islands.

Scientific floras can be reliable sources for some trait data in a system with poor coverage in global trait databases

Vanessa Cutts et al.

Summary: Trait data from scientific floras can be reliable and useful for certain plant traits, but not others. Specifically, leaf area values showed good agreement between scientific floras and field-measured data, while specific leaf area values had a weaker relationship. The TRY database contains many traits, but is incomplete in species coverage for the study region and oceanic islands in general.

Disentangling direct and indirect effects of island area on plant functional trait distributions

Julian Schrader et al.

Summary: Species diversity on islands generally increases with island area. Traits of woody plants, such as tree height, wood density, leaf nitrogen concentration and chlorophyll content, are mainly affected by basal area, which in turn is influenced by both island area and soil depth. Seed and fruit mass variations among islands are explained by a combination of basal area, island area, and isolation.
