A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Iowa Oral Performance Instrument Measures in Persons with Parkinson's Disease Compared to Healthy Adults

Laura L. Pitts et al.

Summary: This study analyzed existing literature comparing tongue strength and endurance between individuals with Parkinson's disease and healthy adults. The findings suggest that reduced anterior tongue strength and endurance are common in individuals with Parkinson's disease and may decline further as the disease progresses. Further research is needed to explore the relationship between tongue strength, tongue endurance, and swallowing physiology, as well as the potential applications of tongue pressure training in dysphagia rehabilitation for individuals with Parkinson's disease.

Dysphagia management in Parkinson's disease: Comparison of the effect of thickening agents on taste, aroma, and texture

Florence Baert et al.

Summary: Dysphagia is a common symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD), where thickened liquids are used for safe swallowing, but patient compliance is low due to dislike of the liquids. This study compared the taste, texture, and aroma of gum-based and starch-based thickened soups in PD participants, with starch-based thickeners showing higher taste and aroma intensity but reduced overall sensory properties. Combining these thickeners with flavor enhancers may improve the palatability of thickened beverages.
