Prevalence and Inpatient Hospital Outcomes of Malignancy-Related Ascites in the United States

Venkataraghavan Ramamoorthy et al.

Summary: In 2015, there were 123,410 MRA hospitalizations in the United States with a median length of stay of 4.7 days, median hospitalization cost of US$43,543, and in-hospital mortality rate of 8.8%. Factors associated with increased hospital length of stay included male sex, black race, and admission to medium and large hospitals; factors associated with higher in-hospital mortality rates included male sex, Asian or Pacific Islander race, beneficiaries of private insurance, Medicaid, and self-pay, patients residing in large central and small metro counties, nonelective admission type, and rural and urban nonteaching hospitals.

Associations Among Health Literacy, End-of-Life Care Expenditures, and Rurality

Kewei Shi et al.

Summary: The study examined the association between health literacy (HL) and end-of-life (EOL) care expenditures in urban and rural counties in the United States. Counties with low health literacy (LHL) had significantly higher average expenditures in the last 6 months of life and during terminal hospitalization than counties with high health literacy (HHL). There was a significant interaction between health literacy and rurality, with higher EOL expenditures in LHL counties in urban areas but no significant relationship in rural areas.

Differences in Breast and Colorectal Cancer Screening Adherence Among Women Residing in Urban and Rural Communities in the United States

Sanjay Shete et al.

Summary: This cross-sectional study compared breast and colorectal cancer screening adherence among women in rural and urban areas, finding lower adherence for colorectal cancer screening in rural areas. The study suggests that colorectal screening may not be as widely available in rural areas as breast cancer screening, indicating lower amenability for colorectal cancer screening intervention.
