Changes in muscle strength and physical function in older patients during and after hospitalisation: a prospective repeated-measures cohort study

Peter Hartley et al.

Summary: The study found that knee-extension strength significantly decreased in older adults during acute hospitalization but did not change post-hospitalization. Grip strength did not change during and after hospitalization, while general functional ability deteriorated and functional mobility improved during hospitalization. Furthermore, the study revealed that greater loss in knee-extension strength during hospitalization was associated with increased sedentary time, frailty, and baseline strength and lower inflammatory levels.

Home First! Identification of Hospitalized Patients for Home-Based Models of Care

Seok M. Lim et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the proportion of hospitalized inpatients suitable for home-based inpatient bed substitutive service and examine potential barriers to inpatients receiving home-based care, with functional disability being a common obstacle. Clinicians experienced in home-based care were more adept at identifying suitable patients for this care model compared to ward-based clinicians.
