Long-Term Outcome of PICU Patients Discharged With New, Functional Status Morbidity

Murray M. Pollack et al.

Summary: The study found that the majority of PICU survivors with significant new functional morbidities at hospital discharge showed improvement after 6 or more months of follow-up, with many recovering to normal status or only mild dysfunction. Additionally, 70% of long-term survivors showed significant improvement after a median follow-up time of 4.0 years.

Factors Associated With Functional Impairment After Pediatric Injury

Randall S. Burd et al.

Summary: Assessing functional impairment in injured children and adolescents can provide more sensitive information on quality of care compared to measuring mortality alone. Risk factors for impaired functional status post-injury include multiple injuries and severe head trauma. Most injured individuals return to baseline functional status by hospital discharge, indicating that functional status assessments can be targeted to those at highest risk for impairment.
