Capture and Separation of SO2 Traces in Metal-Organic Frameworks via Pre-Synthetic Pore Environment Tailoring by Methyl Groups

Shanghua Xing et al.

Summary: In this study, a pre-synthetic pore environment design strategy was utilized to create stable methyl-functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for enhanced low pressure SO2 adsorption and separation from CO2. The key role of increasing methyl group densities at the benzenedicarboxylate linker in optimizing pore size was demonstrated for the first time. Various methods, including gas sorption isotherms, theoretical calculations, simulations, and DFT calculations, were used to validate the SO2 separation potential of methyl-functionalized MOFs.

Deep Desulfurization with Record SO2 Adsorption on the Metal-Organic Frameworks

Fuqiang Chen et al.

Summary: This study reported a family of MOFs with abundant hydrogen bond donors that showed high selectivity for capturing sulfur dioxide in flue gas desulfurization and natural gas purification, along with excellent cycling stability. Multiple hydrogen bonding interactions ensured a firm grasp of SO2 molecules within the framework, leading to high uptake and density. The MOFs exhibited ultrahigh adsorption uptake and selectivity, as well as robust cycling stability even after multiple cycles.
