Abrupt Spin-State Switching in Mn(III) Complexes with BPh4 Anion: Effect of Halide Substituents on Crystal Structure and Magnetic Properties.

Aleksandra Tiunova et al.

Summary: Three tetraphenylborates of mononuclear Mn(III) cation complexes with hexadentate ligands were synthesized and studied, showing that ligand substituents have a dramatic effect on the structure and magnetic properties of the complexes. The complexes exhibited different spin crossover behavior as temperature decreased, with complex 1 showing a gradual spin crossover and complex 2 and 3 demonstrating sharp spin crossovers at different temperatures.

Giant Magnetoelectric Coupling and Magnetic-Field-Induced Permanent Switching in a Spin Crossover Mn(III) Complex

Vibe B. Jakobsen et al.

Summary: The study reveals a giant magnetoelectric effect in a specific compound, where a permanent switching of structural, electrical, and magnetic properties can be induced by applying a magnetic field. This effect is attributed to the change in spin states leading to polarization and symmetry-breaking phase transitions.

General Landau theory of non-symmetry-breaking and symmetry-breaking spin transition materials

Giovanni Azzolina et al.

Summary: Spin-transition materials can undergo various types of phase transitions, including non-symmetry-breaking spin transitions and symmetry-breaking phenomena like structural order or spin-state concentration waves. The Landau approach can be used to describe the coupling between these two types of instabilities, generating different sequences of phase transitions.

Mn(III) complexes with nitro-substituted ligands-Spin states with a twist

Irina A. Kuhne et al.

Summary: The study compared the influence of the position of the electron-withdrawing ligand nitro-substituent on the thermal spin crossover profile of two new Mn(III) complex cations in lattices with five different counterions. The experimental results revealed that the position of the nitro substituent affects the preference trend of the spin state, depending on the crystal packing. This demonstrates that the control of magnetic behavior in the solid state is mainly a cooperative effect from the size and distribution of counterions, crystal packing, and intermolecular interactions.
