Doping-Induced Dielectric Catastrophe Prompts Free-Carrier Release in Organic Semiconductors

Massimiliano Comin et al.

Summary: This study presents a multiscale model for predicting the dielectric properties of doped organic semiconductors, showing a large nonlinear enhancement of the dielectric constant as doping increases. The enhanced screening in the material reduces energy barriers for electron-hole separation, facilitating thermal charge release.

High-Efficiency Ion-Exchange Doping of Conducting Polymers

Ian E. Jacobs et al.

Summary: Molecular doping using redox-active small molecules as dopants for organic semiconductors has attracted increased research interest for various emerging applications. A recent breakthrough in ion-exchange based doping separates the redox and charge compensation steps, leading to high conductivity and ion exchange efficiencies in excess of 99%. Factors enabling high performance include the choice of solvent and increased doping strength, illustrating a connection between electrochemical doping and ion exchange while highlighting limitations in stability at high redox potential.

Anion Exchange Doping: Tuning Equilibrium to Increase Doping Efficiency in Semiconducting Polymers

Tucker L. Murrey et al.

Summary: High electron affinity molecules p-type dope low ionization energy polymers, with anion exchange doping being a process of exchanging dopant anions with stable ions from an electrolyte. The doping level can be predicted using an equilibrium model, with examples showing both nonspontaneous and spontaneous doping processes.

Understanding Bipolarons in Conjugated Polymers Using a Multiparticle Holstein Approach

Mohammad Balooch Qarai et al.

Summary: The Holstein-based model has been expanded to include singlet bipolarons in conjugated polymers with nondegenerate ground states. The mid-IR band for bipolarons is red-shifted by up to 0.2 eV compared to single polarons, reflecting enhanced hole delocalization in the bound bipolaron complex. This observation is in good agreement with recent measurements on electrochemically doped P3HT.

Controlling the Formation of Charge Transfer Complexes in Chemically Doped Semiconducting Polymers

Dane A. Stanfield et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the chemical doping of conjugated polymers and demonstrates how adjusting the casting solvent for the dopant can control the formation of charge transfer complexes (CTCs) and integer charge transfer (ICT). By using different solvent blends, the relative amount of CTCs between P3HT and F(4)TCNQ can be readily controlled, and even in high-crystallinity materials, fractional charge transfer still occurs to some extent.

Displaced Drude peak and bad metal from the interaction with slow fluctuations

Simone Fratini et al.

Summary: This study illustrates and characterizes the phenomenon of transient localization of current-carrying electrons in metals caused by scattering from slowly fluctuating degrees of freedom, leading the system away from normal metallic behavior. Strong interactions at metallic densities enhance electron localization and the emergence of a displaced Drude peak (DDP), altering low frequency optical response and suppressing d.c. conductivity. This phenomenon is commonly observed in electronic systems where slowly fluctuating degrees of freedom significantly couple to charge carriers.
