Energy-preserving methods for nonlinear Schrodinger equations

Christophe Besse et al.

Summary: This paper explores numerical integration methods for nonlinear Schrodinger equations that can preserve energy. The relaxation method, introduced in Besse (1998), is shown to be effective for cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equations, with rigorous proof of its second-order accuracy provided. A generalized version of the method is proposed for handling general power law nonlinearities, with numerical simulations demonstrating efficiency across different physical models.

Mass- and energy-preserving exponential Runge-Kutta methods for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation

Jin Cui et al.

Summary: A family of arbitrarily high-order structure-preserving exponential Runge-Kutta methods were developed for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation by combining the scalar auxiliary variable approach with the exponential Runge-Kutta method. By introducing an auxiliary variable and applying the Lawson method and the symplectic Runge-Kutta method in time, a class of mass and energy-preserving time-discrete schemes were derived which are arbitrarily high-order in time. Numerical experiments demonstrated the accuracy and effectiveness of the newly proposed schemes.

Explicit high-order energy-preserving methods for general Hamiltonian partial differential equations

Chaolong Jiang et al.

Summary: A novel class of explicit high-order energy-preserving methods for general Hamiltonian partial differential equations with non-canonical structure matrix is proposed. By reformulating the original system into an equivalent form with a modified quadratic energy conservation law and discretizing it in time using explicit high-order Runge-Kutta methods with orthogonal projection techniques, the schemes are shown to share the order of explicit Runge-Kutta method and preserve energy while reaching high-order accuracy.

Scalar Auxiliary Variable/Lagrange multiplier based pseudospectral schemes for the dynamics of nonlinear Schrodinger/Gross-Pitaevskii equations

Xavier Antoine et al.

Summary: The paper proposes two linear implicit pseudo-spectral schemes for simulating the dynamics of general nonlinear Schrodinger/Gross-Pitaevskii equations, based on the SAV and LagM approaches. The SAV scheme preserves a modified total energy, while the LagM scheme can exactly preserve mass and original total energy. Each scheme has its own advantages in solving nonlinear algebraic systems and conserving errors.

Maximum bound principle preserving integrating factor Runge-Kutta methods for semilinear parabolic equations

Lili Ju et al.

Summary: This paper investigates high-order MBP-preserving time integration schemes using the integrating factor Runge-Kutta (IFRK) method and shows that the classic four-stage, fourth-order IFRK scheme is MBP preserving for some typical semilinear systems, although not strong stability preserving. The efficiency and convergence of these numerical schemes are theoretically proved and numerically verified, with simulations conducted on 2D and 3D long-time evolutional behaviors, including a model that is not a typical gradient flow as the Allen-Cahn type of equations.

HIGH-ORDER MASS- AND ENERGY-CONSERVING SAV-GAUSS COLLOCATION FINITE ELEMENT METHODS FOR THE NONLINEAR SCHRODINGER EQUATION

Summary: A family of arbitrarily high-order fully discrete space-time finite element methods are proposed for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation. The methods are proven to be well-posed and conserving both mass and energy at the discrete level. Numerical experiments validate the theoretical results on convergence rates and conservation properties, demonstrating the effectiveness in preserving the shape of a soliton wave.
