Cesium and barium removal from aqueous solutions in the presence of humic acid and competing cations by a Greek bentonite from Kimolos Island

Fotini Noli et al.

Summary: The study investigated Cs- and Ba-sorption onto bentonite from Kimolos island in Greece, finding that sorption depended on initial concentration, ionic strength, and temperature, and was well described by Langmuir and Freundlich equations. Thermodynamic parameters suggested that the sorption of Cs- and Ba- was spontaneous and endothermic. The sorption capacity of the Kimolos bentonite for cesium and barium was reduced in the presence of humic acid and competing cations.

Efficient removal of U(VI) from aqueous solution using the biocomposite based on sugar beet pulp and pomelo peel

Mirza Nuhanovic et al.

Summary: The biocomposite sorbent made from sugar beet pulp and pomelo peel was utilized for biosorption of uranium (VI) from aqueous solution. The study found that the adsorption performance of the biocomposite sorbent was best fitted by the Langmuir's isotherm model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 79.36 mg g(-1). The thermodynamic and kinetic parameters indicated that the biosorption process is spontaneous, exothermic, and best fitted to the pseudo-second order kinetic model. The desorption study showed that uranium recovery by 0.1 M NaHCO3 reached 99.24% in the first cycle for the used biocomposite.

Pomegranate peel waste biomass modified with H3PO4 as a promising sorbent for uranium(VI) removal

Mirza Nuhanovic et al.

Summary: Modified pomegranate peel was effectively used as a sorbent for biosorption of uranium(VI) from aqueous solution, achieving a maximum adsorption capacity of 93.40 mg L-1 under optimized conditions. The kinetics study showed best agreement with the pseudo-second order model, while the thermodynamic study indicated the adsorption process is endothermic and nonspontaneous.

Investigation of uranium biosorption using tomato peel in raw and modified form

Anna-Magdalini Psyrillou et al.

Summary: The study found that tomato peel has the potential to remove uranium through adsorption, with improved efficiency after acidic or alkaline treatment. The experiments were conducted under various conditions and the adsorption capacity was evaluated by fitting the data to Langmuir and Freundlich models. The results indicated ion exchange and interactions between uranium and surface functional groups.

A comprehensive review on radioactive waste cycle from generation to disposal

Sharif Abu Darda et al.

Summary: Radioactive wastes are hazardous byproducts of nuclear technology and industrial processes that need to be governed and regulated by government authorities. Different management strategies are implemented based on the type and intensity of radioactive waste, with most waste going through volume reduction, waste immunization, and shielding before being disposed of in long term geological repositories. Highly radioactive spent fuel and reprocessing wastes are temporarily stored until a long-term disposal solution is found.
