Preparation and molecular simulation of grafted polybenzimidazoles containing benzimidazole type side pendant as high-temperature proton exchange membranes

Yiming Xiao et al.

Summary: Phosphoric acid-doped polybenzimidazole membranes with side chains of benzimidazole group exhibit excellent properties in terms of doping level of phosphoric acid, retention stability of phosphoric acid, and proton conductivity under certain mechanical properties, oxidation resistance, and thermal stability. The performance of the grafted membrane is mainly improved by increasing the free volume of the polymer membrane, enhancing the binding energy, and densifying the hydrogen bond network structure between the polymer membrane and phosphoric acid. Adjusting the length of the side chain and the number of benzimidazole groups allows for precise control of phosphoric acid retention stability and proton conductivity.

Fabrication of PBI/SPOSS hybrid high-temperature proton exchange membranes using SPAEK as compatibilizer

Jiayu Yang et al.

Summary: Exploring new methods for developing high-performance membrane materials for use in high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells is important due to the harsh operating conditions. In this study, a new family of hybrid membranes was successfully obtained through the incorporation of sulfonated poly (aryl ether ketone) (SPAEK) compatibilizer and polyhedral-oligosilsesquioxane nanoparticles bearing sulfuric acid groups (SPOSS) into a soluble arylether-type polybenzimidazole (Ph-PBI) matrix. These hybrid membranes exhibited enhanced acid absorption, doping levels, acid retention, and mechanical-dimensional stability, with a high proton conductivity of 126 mS cm(-1) at 200 degrees C. They were also suitable for membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) and achieved a maximum power density of 300 mW cm(-2) at 160 degrees C without humidity.

A review of proton exchange membranes based on protic ionic liquid/polymer blends for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells

Hosni Ahmed Elwan et al.

Summary: Protic ionic liquids are receiving increasing research attention due to their versatile properties, particularly as ideal electrolytes for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Blending various polymers with protic ILs to form solid films for PEMFCs has been explored. Five conventional polymers combined with protic ILs are discussed in detail, along with other polymers used in PEMs based on protic ILs, to provide comprehensive coverage in this area of research.

Summary: Novel high temperature-proton exchange membranes (HT-PEMs) are prepared based on norbornene-type PBI (NbPBI) and double bond ionic liquids, showing high proton conductivity and enhanced phosphoric acid retention. The NbPBI-MPIm membrane exhibits excellent performance at high temperatures. After acid-base doping, NbPBI-PIL membranes demonstrate superior proton transport properties.
