Microstructure Investigation of Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell Catalyst Layers Containing Perfluorosulfonated Ionomer

Maito Koga et al.

Summary: Perfluorosulfonated ionomers are successfully used as ion-exchange membranes in industrial applications, and are also utilized in polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) as a component of the catalyst layer. Through synchrotron X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy analyses, it was found that the ionomers cover the Pt/CB surface and the Pt catalyst nanoparticles aggregate in the catalyst layer of PEFCs.

Characterization of Solvent-Dependent Ink Structure and Catalyst Layer Morphology Based on Ink Sedimentation Dynamics and Catalyst-Ionomer Cast Films

Ahmad Zulfikri Taning et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of particle size distribution and ink sedimentation dynamics on ink structure using AS and AC analyses. It found that the inclusion of ionomer in the ink can affect particle size distribution, while different solvent compositions lead to varied ink sedimentation dynamics. The research also demonstrates the usefulness of AS and AC techniques for studying ink properties.

Editors' Choice-Ionomer Side Chain Length and Equivalent Weight Impact on High Current Density Transport Resistances in PEMFC Cathodes

Nagappan Ramaswamy et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of side chain length and equivalent weight of PFSA ionomers on the transport resistances of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells. It was found that decreasing EW led to higher proton conductivity and water uptake, reducing bulk-H+ and local-O-2 transport resistances in the cathode catalyst layer. A 1D-semi-empirical performance model was developed to quantify the effect of ionomer EW on cell voltage loss factors.

Effects of Ink Formulation on Construction of Catalyst Layers for High-Performance Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells

Qing Gong et al.

Summary: The rational design of catalyst layers in a membrane electrode assembly is crucial for high-performance polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. This study found that the solvent composition significantly affects the pore structure and performance of the catalyst layer, with the appropriate pore structure and enlarged catalyst/ionomer interface leading to improved MEA performance.
