Fast and easy quantification of semi-crystalline microplastics in exemplary environmental matrices by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)

Hajo Bitter et al.

Summary: Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) can be used to quantify microplastics, with improved detection accuracy and limits achieved through defined pre-heating and cooling steps. The method is shown to be feasible for environmental samples, with quantification limits and accuracy demonstrated for various polymers such as PE, PET, PP, and PA6.

Pervasive distribution of polyester fibres in the Arctic Ocean is driven by Atlantic inputs

Peter S. Ross et al.

Summary: Microplastics, including dominant polyester fibers, have been found in widespread distribution across the Arctic region, with nearly three times more particles in the eastern Arctic compared to the west. The potential weathering of fibers from east to west suggests a source from the Atlantic Ocean through atmospheric transport from the South. This highlights the global impact of textile fibers in domestic wastewater, with microplastics reaching even the most remote locations like the North Pole.

A case study on the thermal degradation of an acrylate-type polyurethane wood coating using thermogravimetry coupled with evolved gas analysis

Lars Passauer

Summary: Thermochemical properties of a solvent-borne two-component polyurethane acrylate based wood coating (PUA) and its flame-retardant counterpart treated with TCPP were studied using thermogravimetry coupled with FTIR. The thermal degradation of PUA occurred in four steps, while TCPP mainly suppressed steps II) and III) in PUA-FR at the expense of decarboxylation, also significantly retarding step IVa).

An extensive characterization of various environmentally relevant microplastics - Material properties, leaching and ecotoxicity testing

Ula Rozman et al.

Summary: Different types of microplastics have varying effects on duckweed, with rough-surfaced and sharp-edged microplastics significantly reducing root length, while Bakelite-made microplastics exhibit high leaching and ecotoxicity potential. In contrast, natural particles have no negative impact on duckweed, indicating that the ecotoxicity of microplastics is influenced by their physico-chemical properties.

Accelerated weathering resistance of high-density polyethylene composites reinforced with microcrystalline cellulose and fire retardants

Ayfer Donmez Cavdar et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of weathering on high-density polyethylene composites reinforced with microcrystalline cellulose and fire retardants. Results showed changes in surface characteristics and morphology due to weathering, with additives like ammonium zeolite and mono ammonium phosphate affecting surface features. Mechanical strength decreased by 32% after weathering exposure, but overall mechanical properties were not significantly affected.

Water Repellency of Cellulosic Fibrous Mats Impregnated with Organic Solutions Based on Recycled Polystyrene

Dafni Foti et al.

Summary: The study found that the combination of recycled polystyrene, paraffin wax, alkyd resin, and gum rosin in water repellent formulations exhibited certain degree of water repellency when applied to cellulosic filter paper substrates. Increasing polystyrene concentration reduced water absorption, while the addition of paraffin wax enhanced the hydrophobicity of treated samples. Among the different formulations, the combination of polystyrene and gum rosin was more effective in improving water repellency compared to polystyrene and paraffin wax.
