Sea foam-associated pathogenic bacteria along the west coast of India

Suhas S. Shetye et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic activities release effluents containing nutrients and pathogenic bacteria that change coastal ecosystems. Sea foam, a type of marine pollution, was found in Goa, India, and it may have adverse effects on human health and the tourism industry.

Aerosol Toxins Emitted by Harmful Algal Blooms Susceptible to Complex Air-Sea Interactions

Noemi Inmaculada Medina-Perez et al.

Summary: Critical research is needed to study harmful algal blooms threatening ecosystems and human health, particularly through respiratory routes. This study used a marine aerosol generation tank to investigate the concentrations of toxins synthesized by a natural bloom in both water and air. The results suggest that the production and diffusion of marine toxins in the atmosphere are regulated by complex interactions between biological processes and air-sea aerosol production dynamics.

Role of Sea Surface Microlayer Properties in Cloud Formation

Brianna N. Hendrickson et al.

Summary: The study suggests that sea salt in marine aerosols is the key factor driving cloud formation potential, while organic material from ocean surface waters has minimal impact on the cloud condensation nuclei properties of aerosols. The cloud formation potential of mixed organic and sea salt marine aerosols will be slightly weakened or remain unchanged compared to sea spray aerosols.

Sea foams are ephemeral hotspots for distinctive bacterial communities contrasting sea-surface microlayer and underlying surface water

Janina Rahlff et al.

Summary: The study found that marine foams have a high abundance of phototrophic and prokaryotic cells, as well as a high concentration of surface-active substances. The bacterial communities in foams differ significantly from the sea-surface microlayer and underlying water, characterized by a high abundance of Gammaproteobacteria. Despite differences in overall bacterial composition, the presence of SML bacteria in foams suggests that foams are strongly influenced by the SML.

Environmental vulnerability of the global ocean epipelagic plankton community interactome

Samuel Chaffron et al.

Summary: Using Tara Oceans sampling, a global ocean cross-domain plankton co-occurrence network was identified and niche modeling was used to assess its vulnerabilities to environmental change. The results showed that the plankton interactome self-organized latitudinally into marine biomes and was more connected poleward. These findings provide baseline approaches to assess community structure and organismal interactions under climate scenarios, while identifying plausible plankton bioindicators for monitoring climate change in the ocean.

Simulated perturbation in the sea-to-air flux of dimethylsulfide and the impact on polar climate

Bo Qu et al.

Summary: The research used a global climate model to investigate the impact of marine biogenic emission of dimethylsulfide (DMS) on atmospheric chemistry. Results showed different responses in the southern and northern polar regions after perturbation of DMS flux, with higher increase of sulfur-related substances in the Antarctic region. The perturbation of DMS flux led to an increase in atmospheric DMS, sulfur dioxide, sulfate, and sulfur emissions, emphasizing the importance of future aerosol burden in polar regions and resulting in a cooling effect on surface temperature in the Antarctic and Arctic regions.
