Effects of orthodox religious fasting versus combined energy and time restricted eating on body weight, lipid concentrations and glycaemic profile

Spyridon N. Karras et al.

Summary: The study found that the Orthodox Fasting diet had superior lipid-lowering effects compared to the time-restricted eating pattern. Both groups experienced reductions in BMI, but only the OF group showed significant reductions in total and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels. Glycaemic and inflammatory parameters did not show significant differences between the two groups.

The influence of fasting and energy-restricted diets on leptin and adiponectin levels in humans: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Hamed Varkaneh Kord et al.

Summary: The study shows that fasting and energy-restricted diets can lead to significant reductions in serum leptin concentrations, with no significant effect on adiponectin concentrations. When energy intake is restricted to 50% or less of normal requirements, increases in adiponectin levels may be observed.

Effects of Intermittent Fasting or Calorie Restriction on Markers of Lipid Metabolism in Human Skeletal Muscle

Bo Liu et al.

Summary: Intermittent fasting (IF) has different effects on lipid metabolism compared to caloric restriction (CR), leading to more weight and fat loss, but also reduced expression of antioxidant enzymes. However, fasting can cause insulin resistance and increased PLIN5 expression, possibly reflecting transient lipid storage.

Summary: Normal brain aging is characterized by increased oxidative stress and altered energy metabolism, with significant metabolic changes already appearing in middle age. Intermittent fasting may partially alleviate these changes by suppressing glycolytic enzyme activities.
