Why the breaking of the OOH versus OH scaling relation might cause decreased electrocatalytic activity

Kai S. Exner

Summary: This paper discusses the efforts made in the past decade to break the OER scaling relation, highlighting the challenges in improving OER material design. Introducing kinetics into the thermodynamics-based concept of scaling relations indicates that breaking the relation may reduce electrocatalytic activity, suggesting the need to advance the theoretical description of the OER in different directions, such as investigating competing mechanistic pathways or microkinetic considerations.
