High-speed multi-spectral imaging of the hypergolic ignition of ammonia borane

Michael J. Baier et al.

Summary: Ammonia borane has potential for high performance as a fuel in hybrid rocket systems, with unique characteristics compared to conventional hypergolic fuels. This study used multi-spectral imaging to observe a two-step ignition process for ammonia borane, indicating the significant role HBO2 may play in its decomposition.

Silicon Nanoparticles for the Reactivity and Energetic Density Enhancement of Energetic-Biocidal Mesoparticle Composites

Pankaj Ghildiyal et al.

Summary: Using plasma-synthesized ultrafine Si nanoparticles as an energetic filler in biocidal nanothermite composites shows potential to increase energy density by approximately 21% and enhance combustion performance. However, at nSi loadings higher than 8%, slower burning characteristics of nSi and sintering effects lead to an overall degradation of combustion behavior in the composites.

Mechanism of microwave-initiated ignition of sensitized energetic nanocomposites

Zaira Alibay et al.

Summary: This study investigates spatially localized remote ignition of additively manufactured composites through microwave absorption, finding that ignition delay decreases with increasing power until reaching a saturation region where ignition sensitivity is limited by combustion kinetics. It was discovered that Ti nanoparticles oxidize with O2 at lower temperatures than PVDF fluorination, driving combustion in the process.

Tuning the reactivity and energy release rate of I2O5 based ternary thermite systems

Feiyu Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the tunability of I2O5 based nanothermites by exploring various fuel compositions, demonstrating how the combustion properties can be adjusted by changing the composition of ternary systems. The introduction of Ti or Si into the Al/I2O5 system shifts the reaction initiation mechanism, leading to a correlation between energy release rate and burn time rather than flame temperature. This research provides a new approach to tune the reactivity and energy release rate of I2O5 based nanothermites without affecting energy density.
