Advanced Platinum-Based Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysts for Fuel Cells

Lei Huang et al.

Summary: Fuel cells are cutting-edge energy technologies hindered by expensive Pt catalysts for the ORR at the cathode. Efforts are focused on optimizing Pt-based nanostructures and functional carriers to achieve low-cost and high-activity catalysts. Improved Pt utilization and surface area, reduced consumption and costs, and enhanced stability are key factors for commercializing fuel cells.

Oleylamine Aging of PtNi Nanoparticles Giving Enhanced Functionality for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Gerard M. Leteba et al.

Summary: This study reports a rapid synthesis strategy to produce alloyed PtNi nanoparticles with outstanding functionality for the oxygen reduction reaction. The modified atomic nanostructures outperform the original PtNi particles by more than two-fold in catalytic performance and demonstrate improved cycling durability. These modified PtNi nanoparticles also exhibit significantly higher specific activities and intrinsic area-specific activities for the ORR compared to commercially available Pt/C nanoparticle electrocatalysts.

Highly Ordered Pt-Based Nanoparticles Directed by the Self-Assembly of Block Copolymers for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Zhida Wang et al.

Summary: The study focused on designing Pt-based nanoparticle catalysts with ordered arrays for enhanced oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity. The PtCo@Pt core-shell NP arrays showed higher ORR activity and durability compared to conventional Pt/C catalysts, achieving higher current density and peak power density in single-cell performance tests. Density functional theory calculations indicated that PtCo@Pt NPs had superior ORR activity due to a lower d-band center and weaker oxygen binding energy than Pt and PtCo.

Analysis of the limitations in the oxygen reduction activity of transition metal oxide surfaces

Hao Li et al.

Summary: The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is crucial for fuel cell performance, with TMOs offering operational stability but lower activity compared to Pt-based electrocatalysts. The challenges in finding TMOs with high ORR activity lie in weaker oxygen binding on TMO surfaces and stronger electric field effects, making O-O bond breaking difficult. Experimental screening of 7,798 unique TMO compositions confirmed their lower activity compared to Pt.

Atomically dispersed single iron sites for promoting Pt and Pt3Co fuel cell catalysts: performance and durability improvements

Zhi Qiao et al.

Summary: Integrating PGM-free atomically-dispersed single metal active sites in the carbon support can effectively enhance the performance of PGM catalysts, achieving higher efficiency and sustainability with lower loading. The synergistic interaction between Pt clusters and surrounding FeN4 sites enhances the intrinsic activity of Pt, leading to significantly improved overall catalytic performance and stability.

Interconnected surface-vacancy-rich PtFe nanowires for efficient oxygen reduction

Yanhong Shi et al.

Summary: The study presents the preparation of surface-vacancy-rich PtFe interconnected nanowires as an excellent ORR catalyst, exhibiting high activity and stability in both alkaline and acidic electrolytes. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the vacancies on the Pt-skin provide active ORR sites that weaken the adsorption of O-containing intermediates.
