Structures and dynamic hydration of CaSO4 clusters in supersaturated solutions: A molecular dynamics simulation study

Hui-Ji Li et al.

Summary: The characteristics of CaSO4 clusters in supersaturated solutions were thoroughly investigated in this study, revealing three typical cluster types: dissolved ion associated species, stable aggregates, and CaSO4 precursors. The aggregation of these clusters is accompanied by dehydration and cooperative hydration processes, with distinct behaviors observed for different cluster sizes and structures.

Computational and solubility equilibrium experimental insight into Ca2+-fluoride complexation and their dissociation behaviors in aqueous solutions: implication for the association constant measured using fluoride ion selective electrodes

Ning Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the structure and hydration of CaFx2-x and the association/dissociation behavior of Ca2+-F- in aqueous solutions using molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory calculations. It was found that the primary shell of Ca2+ is flexible in the Ca2+-F- association, with coordination numbers oscillating between 6-9. The calculations showed that the contact ion pair (CIP) is more favorable for CaF(H2O)(14)(+), while the formation of CaF2(aq.) requires overcoming an energy barrier.

A spectroscopic study of solvent effects on the formation of Cu(ii)-chloride complexes in aqueous solution

Ning Zhang et al.

Summary: The study uses a combination of electronic (UV-vis) and X-ray absorption (EXAFS, XANES) spectroscopies to investigate the formation of copper(ii)/chloride complexes in concentrated aqueous solutions. It is found that lowering water activity by adding Mg(ClO4)(2) at a constant Cl-/Cu(ii) ratio leads to the replacement of water molecules by Cl- ions in the primary coordination shell of Cu(ii), similar to the effect of increasing the Cl-/Cu(ii) ratio. This highlights the importance of considering the role of solvent in understanding the stoichiometry and structures of complexes formed in concentrated metal-ion chloride solutions.
