Reconstituting C-Centered Hexagold(I) Clusters with N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands

Zhen Lei et al.

Summary: The use of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands instead of phosphine ligands in gold clusters can lead to ligand-specific photophysical properties, with intramolecular C-H···Au interactions as a key structural feature. NHC ligands produce clusters with nearly identical metal kernels but significantly different luminescent properties compared to phosphine ligands. Extension of the pi-conjugated system of NHCs can result in significant changes in absorption coefficient and emission wavelength.

Theoretical Investigation on the Adsorption and Interface Bonding between N-Heterocyclic Carbenes and Metal Surfaces

Chaofang Deng et al.

Summary: In this study, theoretical investigations were conducted to examine the binding of NHCMe ligands on different solid surfaces, revealing stronger adsorption on Pt (111) and Ti (0001) surfaces compared to the experimentally studied NHC-Au(111) interface. Furthermore, the distance of adatoms from the surface plays a crucial role in determining the molecular orientations of NHCMe, leading to different binding modes. These results suggest great promise for the design of stable NHC-based SAMs with attractive interface features beyond traditional coinage metals.
