Physical modeling of nitrogen slug operation in Xinjiang SAGD projects-Fundamental roles of NCG in SAGD process

Shengfei Zhang et al.

Summary: NCG injection in SAGD can save steam but may lead to gas accumulation and pressure oscillation. NCG fingering speeds up vertical growth of steam chamber, caution should be taken when injecting before chamber maturity.

A cluster-based approach for visualizing and categorizing the impacts of shale barrier configurations on SAGD production

Jingwen Zheng et al.

Summary: This study develops a workflow using multidimensional scaling and cluster analysis techniques to categorize and quantify the impacts of shale barrier configurations on SAGD production, as well as to analyze the dissimilarities among realizations. By measuring the dissimilarity in production responses and grouping cases into clusters, it is found that shale barrier configurations within the same cluster have similar impacts on SAGD production.

Image recognition model based on deep learning for remaining oil recognition from visualization experiment

Yanwei Wang et al.

Summary: Steam flooding and chemical flooding have been proven to be effective methods for developing heavy oil reservoirs, but the majority of oil reserves still remain after these processes. A surfactant-polymer (SP) flooding system was developed and tested, showing a significant increase in oil recovery. Through image recognition technology, different types of remaining oil were identified and classified, laying the foundation for further understanding of oil distribution under different displacement methods.

Time scales for steam injection and bitumen production in steam-assisted gravity drainage

Jingyi Wang et al.

Summary: Despite the technical and economic success of SAGD, improving its thermal efficiency by reducing the steam-to-oil ratio (SOR) faces challenges. The study reveals time scales between steam stimulation and bitumen response can be as high as hundreds of days, calling into question the significance of using SOR as a control variable for behaviors away from the well pair.

Experimental study and numerical simulation of urea-assisted SAGD in developing exra-heavy oil reservoirs

Daode Hua et al.

Summary: Laboratory experiments and pilot applications confirm that urea is an effective agent in enhancing heavy oil recovery, particularly in SAGD. The study investigates the mechanisms of urea co-injection and its impact on reservoirs and pipelines. Results show that the solubility of urea decomposition products affects their distribution in the formation, with low-concentration urea enhancing oil recovery while high-concentration urea reduces it. Additionally, the presence of CO2 near the steam chamber edge and NH3 near the well-bore play a role in enhancing oil recovery in urea assisted SAGD.

Analytical modeling of the oil steam ratio during the lifetime steam-assisted gravity drainage process in extra-heavy oil reservoirs

Lanxiang Shi et al.

Summary: A new analytical model is proposed to predict the steam oil ratio of the SAGD process more accurately, which includes the instantaneous and cumulative steam oil ratios, and is compared and validated with other models and numerical simulation results. This model shows higher agreement with the numerical simulation results and can predict more parameters, providing a fast-effective guide for the design, prediction, and adjustment of field dual-horizontal SAGD well pairs.
