Time-dependent coal permeability: Impact of gas transport from coal cleats to matrices

Chunguang Wang et al.

Summary: The permeability of coal seams is affected by the gas transport within the matrix, causing variations in cleat aperture and permeability over time. Real-time measurements and model improvements show that gas inflow induces coal deformation, transitioning from rapid to slow expansion, and results in a decrease followed by stabilization of coal permeability. Additionally, an Internal Deformation Coefficient is proposed to explain the preferential swelling of matrix blocks towards cleats under pressure.

Hydrogeological control on the accumulation and production of coalbed methane in the Anze Block, southern Qinshui Basin, China

Shida Chen et al.

Summary: This study examines the geological and hydrogeological conditions in the coal-bearing formations of the Anze Block in the southern Qinshui Basin, focusing on water flow direction, hydrodynamic units, and tectonic influences on coalbed methane accumulation and production. Water composition analysis, isotopes, and dissolved solids were used to study co-produced water types, aquifer connections, groundwater flow directions, and water-rock interactions. The study found differences in gas content between coal seams due to varying hydrodynamic units, structural uplift, and faults, with coal seam No. 15 showing higher gas content than coal seam No. 3. Hydrostratigraphic cross sections were used to characterize coalbed methane accumulation in the different coal seams.

Enhanced oil recovery mechanisms of polymer flooding in a heterogeneous oil reservoir

Lu Xiangguo et al.

Summary: In polymer flooding, there is no positive correlation between the viscosity of polymer displacement agents and displacement performance. While polymer with sheet-net structure has the ability to increase viscosity, it has poor compatibility with reservoir rock pore throat structure. On the other hand, heterogeneous weak gel system has higher adsorption and retention capacity, making it easier to establish seepage resistance in porous media.
