Rock brittleness indices and their applications to different fields of rock engineering: A review

Fanzhen Meng et al.

Summary: The research reviewed various definitions of rock brittleness and identified 80 brittleness indices, showing a lack of standardization in the measurement methods. It was found that different field-specific indices are not directly applicable to others, and some empirically-obtained indices may not truly reflect rock brittleness.

Tortuosity of porous media: Image analysis and physical simulation

Jinlong Fu et al.

Summary: Tortuosity is widely used as a crucial parameter in predicting transport properties of porous media, with various definitions and evaluation methods introduced. Geometrical and physical tortuosities can differ greatly in value and should not be used interchangeably. Phenomenological relations between geometrical and physical tortuosities have been established for accurate predictions, taking into account the influence of image size and resolution.

New parameters for charactering the gas-bearing properties of shale gas

Linqi Zhu et al.

Summary: Accurately evaluating the free phase density/hydrogen index and adsorbed phase density/hydrogen index can reflect the reservoir properties and assist in evaluating the reservoir parameters. The method proposed in this study combines the advantages of predicting the physical characteristics of free gas and adsorbed gas and the gas-bearing properties of shale gas reservoirs.

Determination of reservoir wettability based on resistivity index prediction from core and log data

Cheng Feng et al.

Summary: With the increasing demand for precise reservoir characterization in exploration and development of oil and gas, wettability has become more and more significant as it affects oil and water distribution. This study proposed a new method for wettability determination based on resistivity index prediction, which was validated through petrophysical experiments on 30 cores, demonstrating a high level of effectiveness and reliability with a correlation coefficient of 0.96 between the established models and experimental results.

Key factors of marine shale conductivity in southern China-Part I: The influence factors other than porosity

Linqi Zhu et al.

Summary: The research aims to clarify the main controlling factors of resistivity log responses in marine shale gas formations by conducting systematic pilot studies. Analyses on large core test datasets from the Longmaxi-Wufeng Formation and corresponding resistivity logging curves in 4 shale gas areas indicate that mineral composition, especially clay minerals and organic matter, are the main controlling factors of conductivity in low-porosity systems. Elemental logging can accurately reflect the resistivity of the reservoir and help develop future studies on the relationship between electrical conductivity and saturation of shale gas rocks.

The effect of tectonic deformation and preservation condition on the shale pore structure using adsorption-based textural quantification and 3D image observation

Qiyang Gou et al.

Summary: The study shows that tectonism significantly impacts the pore characteristics of organic-rich shales. Shales from stable regions have better pore structure parameters compared to deformed region shales, resulting in higher shale gas yield. The research also provides 3D pore deformation information of shale reservoirs under complex tectonic episodes.

Summary: The heterogeneity of Cambay Shale Formation in Cambay Basin, India has been characterized and discussed at different scales through core observations, electrolog data, and correlations. Sequence stratigraphic analysis identified eleven T-R sequences with different facies distribution within the formation, providing clues for exploring unconventional hydrocarbon potential in the study area.

Quartz types, silica sources and their implications for porosity evolution and rock mechanics in the Paleozoic Longmaxi Formation shale, Sichuan Basin

Hao Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of various forms and sources of quartz on the porosity evolution and rock mechanics of shale samples from the Longmaxi Formation in the Sichuan Basin. Different types of quartz were identified, along with their associated pores, with biogenic silica playing a substantial role in total silica content. The origin of quartz was found to be significant in understanding porosity evolution and rock mechanics, with biogenic silica being a major contributor to brittleness in the lower Longmaxi Formation.

Numerical upscaling of multi-mineral digital rocks: Electrical conductivities of tight sandstones

Xuefeng Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel upscaling method is proposed to accurately estimate the electrical conductivity of tight sandstones by constructing complex digital rocks. Through multi-scale imaging techniques, fine mineral structures and micro pores are revealed, allowing for the calculation of effective conductivity for each mineral phase and estimation of bulk electrical conductivity. The contributions of fluids and clay minerals to the bulk electrical properties are implicitly incorporated, and the method is validated by experimental measurements of formation factors.
