Supercooling capacity and cold tolerance of the South American tomato pinworm, Tuta absoluta, a newly invaded pest in China

Xiao-wei Li et al.

Summary: The study found that the lowest supercooling point of T. absoluta was -19.47 degrees C in the adult stage, while the highest was -18.11 degrees C in the pupal stage. The Ltemp(50) and Ltemp(90) of female and male adults were the lowest after being exposed to cold for 2 hours. However, the Ltemp(50) and Ltemp(90) of female and male pupae were the lowest when the exposure duration extended from 4 to 10 hours. The research indicated that T. absoluta might not be able to overwinter in most of the northern and central regions of Xinjiang, but has a higher overwintering potential in the southern regions.
