Pain versus suffering: a distinction currently without a difference

Charlotte Mary Duffee

Summary: My paper challenges the distinction between pain and suffering proposed by physician-ethicist Eric Cassell, arguing that his understanding is flawed due to neglecting developments in pain science. The discrepancy between Cassell's distinction and current pain research leads to three philosophical problems, questioning the validity of his distinction. Further efforts are needed to articulate the differences, if any, between pain and suffering.

Charlotte Duffee

Summary: This article presents a preliminary intellectual history of suffering in bioethics, focusing on its evolution in different editions of encyclopedias and the influence of Cassell's theory. It shows that suffering was redefined as pain related to one's purpose, rather than just the loss of goods.
