Cleavage of Carboxylic Esters by Aluminum and Iodine

Dayong Sang et al.

Summary: A one-pot procedure for deprotecting carboxylic esters under nonhydrolytic conditions is described, involving the use of aluminum powder and iodine in anhydrous acetonitrile. This method enables the selective cleavage of alkyl carboxylic esters without affecting aryl esters, showcasing its practical significance.

Highly Selective and Catalytic C-N Bond Cleavage of Tertiary Sulfonamides: Scope and Mechanistic Insight

Aditya Bhattacharya et al.

Summary: A highly chemoselective C-N bond cleavage reaction of p-methoxybenzyl- (PMB), 3,4-dimethoxybenzyl(DMB), or cinnamyl-substituted tertiary sulfonamides in the presence of catalytic Bi(OTf)(3) has been successfully demonstrated, resulting in good to excellent yields of the corresponding products. Insights into the reaction mechanism have been obtained through a series of control experiments and mass spectroscopy.
