Sex differences in scores on standardized measures of autism symptoms: a multisite integrative data analysis

Aaron J. Kaat et al.

Summary: After controlling for age, IQ, and language level, sex may have a minimal impact on the estimates of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) severity. Boys may exhibit more severe symptoms in certain areas compared to girls, while girls may show more severity in other aspects, particularly emerging during adolescence.

Sex Differences in Gender-Diverse Expressions and Identities among Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Summary: This study found that girls with ASD are more likely to have gender expressions and behaviors during childhood that do not conform to traditional gender norms, and experience greater distress over gender-related concerns, highlighting the need for individualized support.

Sex Differences in Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Investigation on Core Symptoms and Psychiatric Comorbidity in Preschoolers

Margherita Prosperi et al.

Summary: Findings on sex differences in ASD symptoms and psychiatric comorbidities are inconsistent. This study found no significant difference in autism severity between female and male ASD preschoolers, but females showed lower levels of emotional and anxiety-related problems compared to males. These results highlight the importance of considering sex differences in understanding ASD psychopathology.

Testing the extreme male brain hypothesis: Is autism spectrum disorder associated with a more male-typical brain?

Liza van Eijk et al.

Summary: This study found that individuals with ASD have slightly more male-type brains compared to controls, but this difference can be accounted for by males and individuals with ASD having relatively larger brains. The greater maleness of the autistic brain driven by brain size may be influenced by the same factors that influence brain size.

Sex differences in sensory processing in children with autism spectrum disorder

Joana Maria Almeida Osorio et al.

Summary: This study investigated sex differences in sensory processing symptoms in ASD children and TD children, finding that female ASD children exhibit more severe symptoms compared to their male counterparts. These findings have implications for characterizing female autism profiles and improving early detection, diagnosis, and treatment.

Longitudinal Evaluation of Cerebral Growth Across Childhood in Boys and Girls With Autism Spectrum Disorder

Joshua K. Lee et al.

Summary: The study found that in boys with ASD, cerebral overgrowth driven primarily by increases in gray matter persisted throughout childhood without volumetric regression. In girls with ASD, cerebral volumes were similar to typically developing girls, but growth trajectories of gray matter and white matter were slower. The proportion of gray matter to total cerebral volume decreased at a slower rate in autistic boys and girls.

Hippocampal contributions to social and cognitive deficits in autism spectrum disorder

Sarah M. Banker et al.

Summary: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by impairments in social functioning as well as commonly impaired nonsocial cognition such as hippocampus-dependent spatial reasoning and episodic memory. The symptoms of ASD typically emerge between 12 and 24 months of age, a critical developmental period for the hippocampus. Despite evidence of hippocampal structural abnormalities in individuals with ASD, there has been relatively little focus on hippocampal function in human studies. This review highlights the hippocampus as a promising area of interest for future research in ASD.

The gap between IQ and adaptive functioning in autism spectrum disorder: Disentangling diagnostic and sex differences

Goldie A. McQuaid et al.

Summary: Adaptive functioning, including daily living, communication, and socialization skills, is essential for day-to-day success. Autistic individuals without intellectual disability show a gap between intellectual ability and adaptive skills, which widens with age. Existing studies mainly focus on male ASD samples, leaving unknown whether this gap is also present in ASD females.

Research Review: A systematic review and meta-analysis of sex/gender differences in social interaction and communication in autistic and nonautistic children and adolescents

Henry Wood-Downie et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis revealed significant sex/gender differences in social interaction and communication skills for individuals with ASD, with females showing better skills compared to males. These differences may contribute to the under recognition of autism in females and should be considered in the diagnostic process.
