Citicoline Modulates Glaucomatous Neurodegeneration Through Intraocular Pressure-Independent Control

Yolandi van der Merwe et al.

Summary: Glaucoma is a neurodegenerative disease causing progressive vision loss. Current treatment focuses on controlling intraocular pressure, but there is a need for therapies that protect the visual system independently of pressure. This study found that varying levels and durations of pressure elevation can impact brain connectivity and visual behavior, and that citicoline treatment may help preserve visual brain integrity and function in glaucoma.

Preservation of vision after CaMKII-mediated protection of retinal ganglion cells

Xinzheng Guo et al.

Summary: The study shows that reactivating the CaMKII-CREB signaling pathway can protect retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) from injuries, promoting RGC survival and protecting long-distance RGC axon projections in glaucoma models. Additionally, CaMKII activity is important for RGC survival in the normal retina.
