This paper presents a new hybrid intelligent method for the optimal placement and sizing of active power filters (APFs) from cost point of view in the power distribution system. Different costs of APFs are presented in this paper. To achieve the more saved cost, an intelligent method based on fuzzy logic and imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) is proposed. Four indices are used to identify the initial locations of APFs. A new discrete improved adaptive ICA is proposed to determine the optimal locations and sizing of APFs. The intelligent method is validated on the IEEE 18-bus distribution system. The results show that our hybrid intelligent method is more efficient and economical in comparison with several non-hybrid approaches in this field. Besides, this paper clearly shows the impact of the fixed cost of APFs on investment costs.
