Hepatic stellate cells in the injured liver: Perspectives beyond hepatic fibrosis

Devaraj Ezhilarasan

Summary: The understanding of the pathological role of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) in liver diseases has significantly increased over the past two decades, with a focus not only on liver fibrosis but also on conditions like cholestasis, portal hypertension, and liver cancer progression. Activated HSCs play a critical role in secreting extracellular matrix products and impacting the tumor microenvironment, leading to tumor cell proliferation, metastasis, and immune suppression. The activation of HSCs in the damaged liver is a crucial process involved in the development of cholestasis, portal hypertension, and liver cancer.

Pathophysiological communication between hepatocytes and non-parenchymal cells in liver injury from NAFLD to liver fibrosis

Santosh Kumar et al.

Summary: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a multifactorial disease with a spectrum of pathological conditions, involving liver cell injury and signaling pathways such as lipotoxicity, oxidative stress, inflammation, etc., ultimately leading to liver regeneration and fibrogenesis. Targeting specific liver cell types using nanotechnology shows potential as a therapeutic strategy for NASH and liver fibrosis.
