An experimental approach for measuring carbon dioxide diffusion coefficient in water and oil under supercritical conditions

Mohammad Sadegh Sharafi et al.

Summary: The diffusion coefficient of gases into liquids can be accurately measured through precise experimental setups and novel data analysis methods, which help reduce the impact of incubation period and investigate the effects of temperature, pressure, and phase alteration. Experimental results show that the duration of incubation period decreases with increasing diffusion coefficient, and the influence of pressure on diffusion coefficient varies depending on the state of the gas.

Application of upscaling methods for fluid flow and mass transport in multi-scale heterogeneous media: A critical review

Xiaoying Zhang et al.

Summary: The physical and biogeochemical heterogeneity in geological formations significantly impacts fluid flow and solute transport behaviors, making upscaling a valid approach for estimating large-scale parameters. Deterministic and stochastic are the two main categories of upscaling methodologies, with volume averaging being widely applicable and numerical solutions gaining popularity. The gap between approach algorithms and real-world applications calls for an integrated upscaling framework incorporating uncertainty quantification techniques, data sciences, and artificial intelligence for future geo-energy research.

CO2/N2-switchable sol-gel transition based on NaDC/NaCl solution: Experiments and molecular dynamics simulations

Cheng Yuan et al.

Summary: The CO2/N-2-triggered switchable sol-gel transition based on NaDC and NaCl aqueous solutions has been investigated through experiments and MD simulations. The mixed system shows a recycled CO2/N-2 response, and has the ability to switch between solution state and gel state with a significant variation in shear viscosity within a narrow pH range. The bridging hydrogen bonds between DC- anions and H3O+ or HCO3- ions are key factors for hydrogel formation in the mixed NaDC/NaCl/CO2 system, promoting the growth of micelles and formation of hydrogels.

Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Transport and Structural Properties of CO2-Alkanes

Junfang Zhang et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the interactions between CO2 and two alkanes, finding that CO2 dissolution, alkane specific volume, and swelling are directly related to pressure and alkane chain length. Increasing pressure leads to increased CO2 dissolution and alkane density, while reducing solution viscosity.

Summary: This study presents a new method for calculating Fick diffusion coefficients for high-pressure CO2 and n-alkane mixtures by modifying an existing method. The new approach simplifies the calculation process, providing diffusion coefficients directly and reducing the impact of simulation box size on the results.

Effects of layer-charge distribution on swelling behavior of mixed-layer illite-montmorillonite clays: A molecular dynamics simulation study

Mehdi Ghasemi et al.

Summary: This study used molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the effect of layer charge distribution on the crystalline swelling and hydration behavior of illite-montmorillonite mixed-layer clay. The results showed that the layer charge density and charge location of both illite and Mt significantly influenced the swelling behavior of mixed clays. The presence of highly charged illite led to less swelling behavior of the mixed clays.

Convective-reactive transport of dissolved CO2 in fractured-geological formations

Paiman Shafabakhsh et al.

Summary: Storing carbon dioxide in geological formations is effective in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Fractures play a significant role in the migration and reactions of CO2, affecting storage capacity and plume growth. Neglecting fractures can impact the amount of trapped CO2, especially at low dissolution rates.

Engineering Model for Predicting the Intradiffusion Coefficients of Hydrogen and Oxygen in Vapor, Liquid, and Supercritical Water based on Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Summary: Molecular dynamics simulations were used to calculate the intradiffusion coefficients of H-2 and O-2 in H2O, with Buch and Bohn force fields showing the best performance in reproducing experimental data. The new data and engineering model presented in the study can be valuable for predicting diffusivity of H-2 and O-2 in chemical processes.
