Severe Corrosion of Carbon Steel in Oil Field Produced Water Can Be Linked to Methanogenic Archaea Containing a Special Type of [NiFe] Hydrogenase

Sven Lahme et al.

Summary: Methanogenic archaea play a role in MIC in oil field pipelines, with a newly discovered mechanism involving a (NiFe) hydrogenase. A specific qPCR assay was developed to detect the gene associated with this mechanism, offering a step toward understanding and managing MIC. The proposed MIC biomarker was detected in multiple oil fields, indicating widespread application potential.

Experimental and theoretical (DFT & MC) studies for the adsorption of the synthesized Gemini cationic surfactant based on hydrazide moiety as X-65 steel acid corrosion inhibitor

N. M. El Basiony et al.

Summary: The study reported the synthesis of a new cationic Gemini surfactant (GI-surfactant) and its inhibitory effect on X-65 steel corrosion. Results showed that GI-surfactant had a mixed-type inhibitory effect, with higher efficiency at higher concentrations but decreased at elevated temperatures. Adsorption phenomena and the Freundlich isotherm model were found to be responsible for the inhibition action of GI-surfactant, which was supported by Monte Carlo simulation and X-ray diffraction analysis.

Summary: This study unveiled the anti-corrosion properties of cationic Gemini surfactant DMAEB on N80 C-steel pipes, significantly reducing the corrosion rate by approximately 97%. Electrochemical results showed that DMAEB molecules act as a mixed-type corrosion inhibitor with high inhibition effect and high activation energy. DMAEB's remarkable performance is attributed to physical adsorption on the steel surface, as confirmed by various analysis techniques.
