Fe and O isotopes in coesite-bearing jadeite quartzite from the Western Alps record multistage fluid-rock interactions in a continental subduction zone

Jia-Wei Xiong et al.

Summary: The study indicates that jadeite quartzite is derived from coesite-bearing whiteschist and possibly formed through metasomatism of metagranite by fluids derived from the host whiteschist under ultra-high pressure metamorphic conditions. The composition and isotopic characteristics of the jadeite quartzite suggest it was formed by external fluids interacting with the granites through metasomatism.

Zircon stability grids in crustal partial melts: implications for zircon inheritance

Fernando Bea et al.

Summary: This study investigates the reasons and characteristics of zircon inheritance in granitoids, revealing the significant influence of source composition, temperature, pressure, water content, etc., on zircon survival. Mid-crustal S-type granites with high water content exhibit elevated zircon inheritance, while water-poor granites may inherit less zircon.

Peak Alpine metamorphic conditions from staurolite-bearing metapelites in the Monte Rosa nappe (Central European Alps) and geodynamic implications

Joshua D. Vaughan-Hammon et al.

Summary: The tectono-metamorphic evolution of the European Alps, specifically the Monte Rosa tectonic unit, is still debatable, with peak pressure and temperature estimates varying significantly between different lithologies. Petrological studies in the western portion of the Monte Rosa nappe revealed staurolite-chloritoid-bearing metapelitic assemblages indicating lower peak pressure estimates than previously reported for whiteschist lithologies. The region shows structural coherence, suggesting that the higher pressure in whiteschist lenses may be due to dynamic pressure rather than tectonic slices.

Carboniferous high-P metamorphism and deformation in the Belledonne Massif (Western Alps)

Jean-Baptiste Jacob et al.

Summary: The study confirms the age of Variscan high-pressure metamorphism in the Palaeozoic basement of the western Alps, with ages of 456 ± 4 Ma and 448 ± 6 Ma obtained from eclogites. The peak pressure stage in the retrogressed eclogites was estimated to be >1.4 GPa at 690-740 degrees C, followed by decompression. Metamorphic zircon rims yield U-Pb dates scattering between 340 and 310 Ma, representing late stages of melt crystallization. The development of a mylonitic S2 foliation correlates with retrogression in the amphibolite facies during the mid-late Carboniferous, indicating exhumation of eclogites mixed with mid-crustal felsic lithologies.

Missing lawsonite and aragonite found: P-T and fluid composition in meta-marls from the Combin Zone (Western Alps)

Paola Manzotti et al.

Summary: The study reports the first occurrences of lawsonite and metamorphic aragonite in the meta-sediments from the Combin Zone in the Western Alps. New field and metamorphic data were used to elucidate the P-T evolution and fluid composition of the area, as well as investigate the growth and breakdown reactions of lawsonite. The discovery provides insights into the large-scale metamorphic structure of the Western Alps.
