Fatigue crack growth resistance of a mesoscale composite microstructure Haynes 282 fabricated via electron beam melting additive manufacturing

Patxi Fernandez-Zelaia et al.

Summary: Materials synthesis via additive manufacturing allows control over solidified microstructure, and this study investigated the behavior of composite materials created using this method. Procesesing Ni-based superalloy Haynes 282 using electron beam melting, the researchers produced compact tension samples with spatially varying structures. Fatigue crack growth experiments revealed that the rate of crack growth depended on the degree of microstructural heterogeneity. This work demonstrates the ability of electron beam melting additive manufacturing to tailor crack growth resistance within a component.

Improved grain structure prediction in metal additive manufacturing using a Dynamic Kinetic Monte Carlo framework

Sumair Sunny et al.

Summary: This study introduces a Dynamic Kinetic Monte Carlo numerical modeling framework, which can predict the microstructure of metals in powder bed fusion and directed energy deposition additive manufacturing while accounting for variations in thermal history and heat accumulation. By implementing discretized, spatially-varying melt pools and heat affected zones, the framework overcomes the challenge faced by conventional methods in adapting to different regions and captures the effects of rapid thermal cycles and heat accumulation on grain nucleation and growth.

Experiment and non-local crystal plasticity finite element study of nanoindentation on Al-8Ce-10Mg alloy

Jiahao Cheng et al.

Summary: In this study, nanoindentation experiments and crystal plasticity finite element model were used to investigate the single-crystal properties and sensitivity of parameters of cerium and magnesium strengthened aluminum alloys. Satisfactory matching between experiment and simulation was obtained for each individual grain. The dependence of hardness on indent depth, as well as the effect of grain orientation and neighboring grains to nanoindentation behavior, were discussed.
