Densification of non-radioactive porous siliceous particles loaded with cesium potassium copper hexacyanoferrate by spark plasma sintering

Nicolas Massoni et al.

Summary: In the development of a conditioning process for cesium-bearing sorbents, a two-step process involving calcination and spark plasma sintering was used to densify the sorbents. The densification was primarily driven by the viscous flow of a vitreous phase containing cesium formed during calcination, followed by further density increase through grain boundary diffusion during sintering. However, a limited but non-negligible amount of cesium was lost during the densification process.

The mechanisms were determined based on sintering trajectories of different commercial submicronic powders with varying yttria amounts and particle sizes. Densification was found to occur through grain boundary sliding and other mechanisms, while grain growth followed a power law in fully densified ceramics.

The Cu-coating on the ceramic surfaces improves direct current passage for more efficient heat conversion. The three stages of displacement under load promote neck growth and achieve a relative density above 97%.

Comparison of Conventional and Flash Spark Plasma Sintering of Cu-Cr Pseudo-Alloys: Kinetics, Structure, Properties

Kirill V. Kuskov et al.

Summary: The kinetics of SPS consolidation for copper-based pseudo alloys was investigated in the heating rate range of 0.1 to 50 K/s, with flash spark plasma sintering (FSPS) achieving much higher consolidation rates compared to conventional SPS. Mechanically induced composite Cu/Cr particles showed sintering rates 2-4 times higher than traditional Cu + Cr mixtures, with a lower apparent sintering activation energy. It was concluded that FSPS of nanostructured powders is an efficient approach for the fabrication of pseudo-alloys.

Summary: This research investigated the mechanical properties of Ti(C,N)-reinforced alumina-zirconia composites with different ratios of C to N using spark plasma sintering and pressureless sintering methods. The addition of Ti(C-0.5,N-0.5)n nanopowder resulted in the highest Vickers hardness and fracture toughness, while the composite with the Ti(C-0.3,N-0.7) phase showed lower hardness and specific wear rate. The mechanical properties slightly decreased with increasing sintering temperature, and samples sintered using pressureless sintering had lower properties compared to those sintered using spark plasma sintering.

Structural changes and pseudo-piezoelectric behaviour of field assisted sintered calcium titanate

Summary: The study reveals that nanostructured calcium titanate prepared by sol-gel synthesis and field assisted sintering exhibits piezoelectric behavior, while conventionally sintered samples do not. This behavior is attributed to the formation of highly localized defects during field assisted sintering, leading to lattice distortions and the generation of electric dipoles, resulting in pseudo-piezoelectric behavior.
