Linking Microbial Functioning and Trophic Pathways to Ecological Status in a Coastal Mediterranean Ecosystem

Franco Decembrini et al.

Summary: Coastal marine ecosystems in the Gulf of Manfredonia are influenced by continental inputs and mesoscale properties of seawater masses. By analyzing phytoplankton and bacterial composition and metabolism, the ecosystem status can be inferred. Higher phytoplankton biomass and production were observed in coastal waters compared to offshore waters, indicative of active microbial metabolism.
