The structures and magnetic properties of SmFe5_xTix melt-spun ribbons were studied, revealing that the alloys containing different metastable phases exhibited varying coercivity values as the titanium content increased.
The structures and magnetic properties of SmFe5_ xTix (x = 0-1) melt-spun ribbons were studied. The specimens without Ti and with a Ti content of 0.4 or lower contained the metastable SmFe5 phase, whereas the specimens with a Ti content of 0.6-1 did not contain the SmFe5 phase but consisted of another metastable phase, namely, the Sm5Fe17 phase. It was found that the specimens with a Ti content of 0.8-1 also consisted of the Fe2Ti phase. Although the specimens with the metastable SmFe5 phase did not show a high coercivity, the specimens with the metastable Sm5Fe17 phase showed greatly increased coercivity, with the SmFe4.2Ti0.8 specimen exhibiting a high coercivity exceeding 20 kOe.
