Rebecca L. Siegel et al.

Summary: Every year, the American Cancer Society projects the numbers of new cancer cases and deaths in the United States, with the latest data showing a significant decline in lung cancer mortality, while prostate cancer mortality has plateaued and breast and colorectal cancer mortality have slowed. Improvements in treatment have accelerated progress against lung cancer, leading to a record drop in overall cancer mortality.

Gender and race interact to influence survival disparities in head and neck cancer

Angela L. Mazul et al.

Summary: The study found that gender and race have an impact on the overall survival of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, with female non-oropharyngeal HNSCC patients having better five-year overall survival compared to males. Black females had poorer survival rates compared to White and Hispanic males, with oral cavity cancer being more common among Hispanic and White females.

Clinical manifestations of hypopharynx squamous cell carcinoma and treatment outcomes according to age at diagnosis

Yujiao Li et al.

Summary: The study assessed the clinical manifestations and prognostic value of age on overall survival and cancer-specific survival for hypopharynx SCC using the SEER database. Younger patients tended to have better survival rates, but age was not significantly associated with higher risk of dying from hypopharynx SCC in high-risk patients with more aggressive disease. Tumor characteristics should be considered over age in treatment decisions for this patient population.
