Plasma inhomogeneity effects on particles energization by high-power laser pulse in a finite-size plasma

Ameneh Kargarian et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of plasma inhomogeneities on nonlinear laser energy absorption in finite-size plasmas using relativistic electromagnetic simulations. It is found that plasma inhomogeneity can initially increase nonlinear absorption due to phase mixing/wave breaking but eventually reduces absorption rates due to parametric instabilities. These findings have important implications for experiments involving high-power lasers interacting with inhomogeneous plasmas.
