Simulating algal dynamics within a Bayesian framework to evaluate controls on estuary productivity

Alexey Katin et al.

Summary: The Neuse River Estuary in North Carolina, USA has been impacted by agricultural and urban watershed activities, leading to eutrophication. Three models were compared, with the mechanistic model showing better predictability of phytoplankton biomass. Concentration reductions, rather than total loading reductions, were found to be key in controlling estuary chl-a levels, with nitrogen being the primary limiting factor even under reduced phosphorus scenarios.

Changes in algal bloom dynamics in a regulated large river in response to eutrophic status

Sunim Bae et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the factors affecting algal growth due to changes in hydrologic and hydrodynamic conditions caused by weir constructions along the Nakdong River. It found that algal blooms increased in the upper and middle streams post-construction, while decreasing in hypereutrophic downstream areas. The impacts of weirs on algal growth showed both positive and negative effects.
