Eco-hydrologic stability zonation of dams and power plants using the combined models of SMCE and CEQUALW2

Rouhallah Fatahi Nafchi et al.

Summary: This study focused on determining stable and instable eco-hydrologic regions in the study area by selecting factors affecting eco-hydrologic stability, preparing layers in GIS, weighting factors using analytic hierarchy process and pairwise comparisons, and integrating homogenous units to create a final map. The CEQUALW2 software was used to confirm data accuracy and perform water quality simulation in the studied dam, with pollutant source and water quality identified as the most important factors. The final map indicated unsuitable stability conditions in most areas at downstream reaches.

Assessing the contribution of groundwater to catchment travel time distributions through integrating conceptual flux tracking with explicit Lagrangian particle tracking

Miao Jing et al.

Summary: The study investigates the characteristics and influencing factors of travel time distributions in a catchment area, finding that topography and aquifer structure have significant impacts on groundwater travel times, while meteorological drivers also affect transport processes in soil zones and groundwater. The catchment travel time exhibits power-law shape and fractal behavior, with prediction uncertainty primarily influenced by deep groundwater. Multiple summary statistics are recommended to minimize predictive uncertainty introduced by tailing behavior in catchment travel time distributions.

Summary: The study highlights the significant overexploitation of groundwater resources in Iran leading to decline in water levels and quality. Simulation results suggest that the concentration of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) will increase further if the current situation persists.

Characteristics of inverted saturated zone under unclogged streams

Dawei Cheng et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the evolutionary process and frontal movement of inverted saturated zones (ISZ) under unclogged streams. It defines a uniform saturation zone, revisits concepts like specific yield and infiltration rate, and develops two new ISZ models. The study shows that classical free surface equations are not self-consistent, with the ISZ frontal surface (IFS) exhibiting different modes over time. The findings help reconstruct the theoretical basis of stream-aquifer system evolution and better understand the physical meaning of free surface equations.
