Background dominant colors extraction method based on color image quick fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm

Zun-yang Liu et al.

Summary: The study proposes a Color Image Quick Fuzzy C-Means (CIQFCM) clustering algorithm based on clustering spatial mapping, which is used for rapid extraction of dominant colors in background images. The results show that setting the quantization interval to 4 can improve clustering efficiency while maintaining good clustering effects. Furthermore, as image size increases, the efficiency improvement of the CIQFCM algorithm also increases, demonstrating its significant advantage in extracting dominant colors from large-size images.

Evolution of the dry-wet variations since 1834 CE in the Liiliang Mountains, north China and its relationship with the Asian summer monsoon

Qiufang Cai et al.

Summary: Under the background of global climate change, more local and regional long-term high-resolution climate reconstructions, especially hydroclimate, are needed to better predict and cope with future climate change. The reconstructed SPEI26 reflects the dry-wet variations in North China from spring to early summer, showing different dry and wet periods. The study suggests that the strength of the Indian summer monsoon and the East Asian summer monsoon in the previous year play vital roles in the dry-wet variations. Additionally, the Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation index influences the hydroclimate in North China by impacting the Asian summer monsoon system.

Use time series NDVI and EVI to develop dynamic crop growth metrics for yield modeling

Sadia Alam Shammi et al.

Summary: This study introduced new crop growth metrics based on NDVI and EVI, which were found to be effective for monitoring crop growth and modeling yield, particularly for soybean in Mississippi Delta. The models based on NDVI-derived VGM85 and EVI-derived VGMmax showed the best fit for linear yield modeling in this region.

Mapping abandoned farmland in China using time series MODIS NDVI

Xiufang Zhu et al.

Summary: The study used a decision tree classification to develop land cover land use (LCLU) maps for the period 2000-2017 based on satellite data, and analyzed the spatial distribution, intensity, trend, frequency, and recultivation of abandoned farmland in China. The results showed that approximately 60% of agricultural areas in China experienced an increasing trend in farmland abandonment, with the average national rate being 5% over the period 2002-2017. This study also produced the first map detailing the distribution of abandoned farmland across China.

Quantitative contributions of climate change and human activities to vegetation changes over multiple time scales on the Loess Plateau

Shangyu Shi et al.

Summary: The study found that vegetation coverage on the Loess Plateau is increasing, positively correlated with the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI), indicating that long-term water availability is the major climate factor affecting vegetation growth. Climate change accounts for 45.78% of vegetation change, while human activities account for 54.22%, with the relative role of climate change increasing with time scales.

Spatio-temporal variation characteristics of NDVI and its response to climate on the Loess Plateau from 1985 to 2015

Peng Li et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the spatial-temporal variation characteristics of NDVI on the Loess Plateau and its response to climate using data from GIMMS NDVI 3g and five climatic factors. The results showed an overall upward trend in vegetation at the annual scale, with severe degradation in certain regions. The correlation between NDVI and atmospheric pressure was negative, while it was positive for the other four climatic factors. The study also found different impacts of climatic, topographical, and geographical elements under different land uses on the spatial distribution of NDVI.

Factors controlling the asymmetry of soil moisture and vegetation dynamics in a hilly Mediterranean catchment

V Garcia-Gamero et al.

Summary: The study in southern Spain revealed that aspect influences the ecohydrological dynamics of an oak-woodland savanna, with north-facing slopes drying out earlier and having denser vegetation compared to south-facing slopes. The presence of deep weathered bedrock on the north-facing slope provides an additional water source for vegetation, while vegetation on the south-facing slope relies mainly on soil moisture.

Improving terrestrial evapotranspiration estimation across China during 2000-2018 with machine learning methods

Lichang Yin et al.

Summary: Accurately estimating terrestrial evapotranspiration (ET) in China is important for water resource management. This study evaluates six machine learning methods to improve China terrestrial ET estimation, with the Gaussian process regression (GPR) method showing superior performance. The results suggest that the GPR method can reduce errors and improve accuracy compared to other methods and available ET products.
