Initial Upper Palaeolithic humans in Europe had recent Neanderthal ancestry

Mateja Hajdinjak et al.

Summary: A recent study found that three Late Pleistocene modern humans from Bacho Kiro Cave in Bulgaria, dated to between 45,930 and 42,580 years ago, are the earliest known in Europe and show closer genetic ties to East Asian and American populations. These individuals also had Neanderthal ancestors in their family history, suggesting common mixing between the first European modern humans and Neanderthals.

The absolute chronology of Boker Tachtit (Israel) and implications for the Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition in the Levant

Elisabetta Boaretto et al.

Summary: The Initial Upper Paleolithic (IUP) represents a significant period in Southwest Asian archaeology, marked by a shift in hominin populations and technological changes. The Boker Tachtit site in Israel is considered the origin of the Early Upper Paleolithic Ahmarian tradition. New dating shows that the IUP began in the Levant around 50,000 years ago and overlapped chronologically with the Early Upper Paleolithic Ahmarian period between 47 and 44 thousand years ago in the Negev region.

Subarctic climate for the earliest Homo sapiens in Europe

Sarah Pederzani et al.

Summary: This study reveals that early Homo sapiens in Europe experienced subarctic climates similar to 45,000 years ago, challenging previous assumptions about the role of warm climates in human expansion. This highlights the need for revising key models of human expansion and reconsidering the deterministic role of climate in our evolutionary history.
