Summary: In this study, it was found that females were more likely to have symptoms and a higher number of symptoms than males after influenza challenge. Neuraminidase inhibition (NAI) titers were found to be predictive of all outcomes of interest.

Summary: This study found that co-infection with Aspergillosis significantly increased mortality in severe influenza patients, which was associated with severe respiratory failure and immunosuppression. Pulmonary excessive inflammatory response was related to Aspergillosis co-infection.

Invasive Aspergillosis After Influenza and Other Viral Respiratory Infections Among Intensive Care Unit Patients in a Commercially Insured Population in the United States, 2013-2018

Mitsuru Toda et al.

Summary: Influenza-associated aspergillosis (IAA) is emerging among intensive care unit patients with severe influenza. A study of a large US health insurance claims database from 2013 to 2018 found IAA to be uncommon (0.3%), possibly due to underdiagnosis and variations in medical practices or epidemiology.

Diagnostic value of galactomannan test in non-immunocompromised critically ill patients with influenza-associated aspergillosis: data from three consecutive influenza seasons

Linna Huang et al.

Summary: This study explored the diagnostic value of GM detection in non-immunocompromised critically ill patients with influenza-associated aspergillosis. The results suggest that BALF GM test may have better diagnostic value for IAA in the ICU compared to serum GM test, and at least one positive result on two consecutive serum GM tests appeared to be useful.

Systematic Review Incidence, diagnosis and outcomes of COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA): a systematic review

W. H. Chong et al.

Summary: CAPA is defined as invasive pulmonary aspergillosis occurring in COVID-19 patients, with a high mortality rate of 48.4%. The diagnosis is limited by lack of standardized criteria, necessitating further research to determine the optimal diagnostic approach.

Posaconazole for prevention of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis in critically ill influenza patients (POSA-FLU): a randomised, open-label, proof-of-concept trial

Lore Vanderbeke et al.

Summary: IAPA is a common and significant complication in critically ill influenza patients, with high mortality despite timely antifungal therapy. Prophylaxis with intravenous posaconazole did not significantly reduce the incidence of IAPA compared to standard-of-care. Alternative management strategies are needed due to the high mortality associated with early IAPA and the potential benefits of prophylaxis in some patients after 48 hours.
