Irrigation using hybrid constructed wetland treated domestic sewage: Uptake of phthalic acid esters and antibiotics by Ipomoea aquatica forssk

Xiaoyan Tang et al.

Summary: Irrigation with treated wastewater has been promoted globally to address water scarcity. This study found that hybrid constructed wetlands can effectively reduce the transfer of targeted contaminants to soil and plants, with HCW2 being the most efficient. Different properties of phthalic acid esters and antibiotics resulted in varying accumulation patterns in the environment. While the irrigated Ipomoea aquatica presented minor health risks, further safety evaluation is necessary for widespread use of HCWs treated wastewater for irrigation purposes.

Influence of hydraulic loading rate on antibiotics removal and antibiotic resistance expression in soil layer of constructed wetlands

Lin Liu et al.

Summary: The behavior of veterinary antibiotics and corresponding resistant genes in the soil layer of constructed wetlands, as well as their response to different hydraulic loading rates (HLR), were investigated in this study. Results showed that the soil layer had good performance in removing oxytetracycline and ciprofloxacin, but unsatisfactory results for sulfamethazine. The study also found that the removal efficiency of certain antibiotics in the soil layer could be affected by the hydraulic loading rate, and the expression of antibiotic resistance genes in the soil increased with higher hydraulic loading rates.

Summary: This study found that glucose outperformed other carbon sources in MFC-CWs, with moderate concentration (200 mg L-1) resulting in the best removal of SMX and TC. The highest removal percentages of SMX and TC were obtained in MFC-CWs with an external resistance of 700 Omega. Aeration for 12 hours was shown to improve the removal efficiency of antibiotics in MFC-CWs.

Comprehensive benefits assessment of using recycled concrete aggregates as the substrate in constructed wetland polishing effluent from wastewater treatment plant

Zhi Cao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the comprehensive superiority of using recycled concrete aggregate as the substrate in constructed wetland systems. Results show that this practice can reduce environmental burden and total costs, and has better wastewater polish performance, especially in terms of phosphorus removal capacity. The grey water footprint reduction of system 2 is on average 4.5 times as large as that of system 1.

Removal of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) from wastewater using microalgae: A review

Sufia Hena et al.

Summary: Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are emerging micro-pollutants that have harmful effects on living organisms even at low doses. Previous studies have shown their presence in the environment at hazardous levels due to inefficient conventional wastewater treatment plants. Microalgae-mediated treatment offers benefits such as CO2 mitigation during culture and the use of biomass for biodiesel or biofuel production.

A review on performance of constructed wetlands in tropical and cold climate: Insights of mechanism, role of influencing factors, and system modification in low temperature

Mahesh Varma et al.

Summary: Constructed wetlands are a promising and sustainable option for wastewater treatment, with various mechanisms for contaminant removal and performance depending on factors such as hydraulic loading rate, pH, dissolved oxygen, and temperature. Studies have shown that CWs perform differently in different climates, with significant challenges in cold climates which require modifications like greenhouse construction, insulation, and bioaugmentation to enhance performance.

New insights on the combined removal of antibiotics and ARGs in urban wastewater through the use of two configurations of vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands

Cristina Avila et al.

Summary: The study investigated the removal of 49 antibiotics and 11 selected antibiotic resistance genes in two vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands. It was found that the partially saturated unit (SVF) showed more significant removal of certain antibiotics compared to the unsaturated unit (UVF). All selected antibiotic resistance genes were detected in influent wastewater and in the biofilm of both wetlands, with varying removal rates.

Fate and removal of bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes in horizontal subsurface constructed wetlands: Effect of mixed vegetation and substrate type

Ammar Abou-Kandil et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of cropping method and substrate type on the removal of bacterial and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) by constructed wetlands (CWs) during start-up and maturation stages. The results showed that the removal efficiencies increased with operation time, with the tuff-filled serially planted CW demonstrating the highest efficiency in removing these genes. Metagenomic analysis revealed that most ARGs belonged to bacterial efflux transporter superfamilies, and although ARGs were removed, they were still detected in substrate biofilm with increased concentrations in effluents. The study suggested that a combination of serial plantation with high-surface-area substrate could enhance CWs' performance in removing bacteria and ARGs.

Summary: The study demonstrates that wetland vegetation cover is related to microbial diversity, with different plants affecting soil microbial diversity and abundance differently.
